As the name suggests, there is no mirror or prism in the camera. Unlike a DSLR, there is no reflex mechanism at all. Saving a great deal of space inside the camera housing and making mirrorless cameras smaller and more compact.
Advantages Of A Mirrorless System
COMPACT, LIGHTWEIGHT & STEALTHY
The latest technology has given rise to small mirrorless cameras with sensor sizes equivalent to DSLRs. Many photographers prefer the compact size camera to shoot stealthy and blend into their surroundings. Shooting candid moments can be easier with a smaller camera. They are less noticeable than a big, “bulky” DSLR.
BURST SHOOTING & VIDEO
Since mirrorless cameras are built without a reflex mechanism, their systems are set up more efficiently to shoot in continuous, burst and video modes. No moving parts mean more images (or frames) can be taken in less amount of time. A DSLR can only operate as fast as its moving parts will allow.
ELECTRONIC VIEWFINDER (EVF)
A what-you-see-is-what-you-get viewfinder. This is an electronic, pixel by pixel look at the scene that's in front of you. A photographer can make changes to the exposure settings and see how a photo will look BEFORE it is taken! DSLRs with its OVF system shows you the scene as it looks to the naked eye, without the electronic preview. Photographers with only an OVF tend to "chimp" more (sneak peeks at their display screen after each shot).
